Setting stretch goals is the key identifyer of top performers

Very interesting study on HBR.org: The Behaviors that Define A-Players.
A huge amount of data was analyzed to find out what top employees have in common, and the most outstanding statistical differentiator seems to be that they set (and meet) goals others think were not reachable. Although less than 1 in 10 people think this would be a key indicator. Read more:
